In order to formulate the best premix, one should consider several things:
What is your production goal?
Feed and feed additives need to supply the right amounts of all nutrients to meet the requirements for maintenance, lactation, reproduction, growth and development.
What are you providing from existing feed?
Every feed supplies something to the overall mix, and we need to allow for this to ensure the balance is right.
How do fix the shortfall?
This is not only about what needs to be added, but how.
Other Considerations
Forms:
Mineral pellet, loose premix blended into a feed (into PKE or over silage), loose licks containing macro minerals such as phosphorous, magnesium or calcium.
Water soluble or dry blend:
This affects the form of each additive used, and depends on the feeding system available.
Seasonal additives:
At certain times of the year other products can be useful, such as Biotin, ionophores (bovatec, monensin), prebiotics or probiotics. All these can be accommodated into a premix product.
