Palatants are used in small amounts but have a significant effect on the palatability of feeds. They can be added to improve acceptance of feed to increase intake, used as feed intake regulators, or used to mask unpalatable or bitter additives, such as some minerals. They can be flavours that act as an attractant, sweeteners to improve taste, flavours for masking, or combinations of these.
Traditionally in compound feeds, whether blends or pellets, a Palatant is used. An attractant helps draw animals to the feed, then sweeteners and flavours enhance the taste and improve uptake. As cows have 10,000 receptors they can be pretty fussy at times. This is particularly important with bitter feed ingredients. This can depend on the ingredient, or the form of the ingredient. For instance, with magnesium, the finer the particle size the more bitter the taste becomes.
