Choosing the Correct Product
This depends largely on the age and stage of the birds. However, in a setting where all ages may be together choices have to be made. It can be influenced by where the birds have come from and what they were previously fed.
Pre-Lay (Early Lay) is for birds 15-17 weeks and sets the body up to begin egg production. It is important to note that it only has half the calcium and less than the required amount of energy and amino acids required for maximum growth and egg production.
At 17 weeks the birds are only about three quarters grown. Changing to a Peak Lay (17-45 weeks) formula adds the correct calcium/phosphorous mix for egg production plus extra protein for growth. Older, fully grown birds can reduce their protein levels which is what Late Lay (46+ weeks) does.
If incoming birds have been developed properly, and had Pre-Lay, then they could be fed Late Lay if all birds are together, but growth to maturity will take longer.
Alternatively, there is no harm feeding all birds Peak Lay, although there can be wastage of protein by older birds. Please note that not all young stock are fed Pre-Lay, so if they have only received Developer or Pullet feed, then they should be fed some Peak Lay to maximise growth and ensure good egg quality and consistent laying.
Products are available as mash or pellets. Pellets are preferred as there is no wastage, and the pelleting process kills salmonella.
Instructions for Use
Free Range Layer pellets can be fed as a complete diet or supplemented with household scraps or vegetables.
Where the percentage of other feed sources is over 25%, extra calcium should be supplemented in the form of Oyster Shell grit or a similar product to ensure good eggshell quality is maintained.
If fed as 100% of the diet then feed approximately 125g per hen per day during spring/summer and 130g per bird per day over the cooler months.
